Cock-a-doodle-doo!

As of January 28img_1642th, we are in the official Chinese Year of the Rooster. It is a sign of meticulousness, loyalty, vitality, punctuality and humor. Great strengths to tap into this year, no? But seriously, if horoscopes are a bunch a silliness to you, consider the rooster and his chicks anyway. As everyone knows, chickens give you great eggs(with or without the rooster), fresh is simply the best tasting and far more nutritious than those sitting in the grocery store for sometimes 6 weeks. They’ll add to your garden/yard with their chicken manure, gladly rid of your kitchen scraps, and when allowed to forage, they’ll tend to your snails, grubs, ticks, crickets, beetles, aphids and other such insects very happily. Ultimately, if you do like to eat chicken, you’ll know exactly how non-GMO, free-ranging, and humanely raised they really were. As for actually having a rooster for your flock- they are protective of their hens-warning of incoming danger from predators…also alerting you if someone/something is coming on your property. Almost as good as a dog, but no need for a pet sitter if you should be gone for a couple of days. Chicken upkeep is very inexpensive as well. Don’t forget these plucky cluckers have quite the personalities too! Our student farm would not be the same without them…(though they are kept away from our harvestable areas for organic certification). Maybe you should consider a few too. The benefits go on and on!
