CSA Newsletter_ Week 7_ of Session_4_08/30/12

Greetings from The Student Farm CSA,

What’s In the Box this Week?

  • Potatoes
  • Garlic
  • Basil
  • Edamame
  • Sweet Potato Greens
  • Eggplant
  • Okra
  • Green Tomatoes
  • Lemon Balm
  • Peppers, Hot & Sweet

What’s up for grabs?

  • Garlic Chive Flower Heads

What are Garlic Chives you might ask.  They look similar to chives.  They can be used like chives, on a baked potato, in a salad, etc.  The flower heads are edible and can be broken up and sprinkled on your salad or use your imagination and tell us what ideas you have for this special CSA Box addition.  These are not in your box; they are on the counter across from the cooler in a vase of water.  Take some and give them a try.

We have included green tomatoes, & you know what that means!

Fried Green Tomatoes!  check out this site for recipes

The peppers in your box are Round of Hungary (red when ripe, a pimento cheese pepper), Antohi Romanian (sweet Eastern European frying pepper),Olympus (large green sweet pepper), Carmen (sweet pepper), Pepperoncino, and a jalapeno pepper.

Sweet Potato Greens; another new green for you to love!

Sweet Potato Greens are eaten throughout Asia and Africa.  They are very nutritious, tender and tasty.  These greens can be cooked the traditional way with some oil, garlic, lemon, salt & pepper, but here is an interesting recipe I found at Mother Earth News. Let us know how you like this new addition to the CSA Box.
