sustainability camp

Young people visiting this week from all over Chatham County to learn first hand about potential careers in sustainable enterprises. The Student Farm was involved on days 1 & 2- the Farm to Fork focus.

What did we do? Dug for buried treasure- new potatoes that is! Red Cloud and Carola are two of the varieties that our ‘campers’ helped us to harvest. Beautiful, red, smooth-skinned potatoes and golden, yellow fleshed potatoes that today are becomming part of the menu as the campers make gnocchi.

The Java chickens all received special attention from the campers today as well. We took the time to learn about chicken habits, their daily needs and the reproductive biology of the chicken. Special treats for the chickens came from leftover lunch, the chickens feasted on bits of pita bread, hummus and peels from cucumbers and basil leaves.

Hayes explored the worm bin with the campers and extolled the benefits of having worms as part of the “livestock” for your farm. Worm castings make a great addition to potting mix, and as a soil ammendment.

We also did some work in the medicinal/culinary herb garden, cutting back comfrey and adding it to the compost pile and learning about the various uses for herbs.

The campers will spend the rest of the week learning about green building and renewable energy technologies.

Other CCCC sustainable ag students are out and about doing their summer internships, one of our students is farming in Japan, and several are working on farms locally. Tomorrow I will be making a site visit to Bluebird Hill Farm in Bennet, famous for it’s lavender where Storey has completed her summer internship distilling essential oils and making herbal teas.

Today is a National Day of Action for Sustainable Agriculture- one more opportunity to call your senators and let them know that you think sustainable agriculture is important and worth supporting.
